Player Development Pathways

The development of a soccer player is a long process in which the players progress gradually from a simple to a more complex involvement in the game. This progression requires proper guidance and direction from coaches who are ethical, knowledgeable and licensed. This process cannot be rushed, but players should participate at a level that is both challenging and demanding. There is no guarantee that a player will reach his or her potential, but the opportunity must be provided!

“…we must develop a culture and a way of thinking whereby highly skilled and qualified coaches are assigned to coach the younger players.”
- Jeff Tipping, former director of coaching, NSCAA

U5-U8 Enjoying the Game: (Train to train )
Natural movements (running, jumping, rolling etc.) are all part of players learning to understand their bodies, help develop balance and agility and begin a love affair with the game. Should be lots of interaction with the ball. Each player should have a ball in training.

U8-U11 Fundamental Mastery: (Train to train)

The Club’s primary focus at the youngest age groups will be on technical development. Developing the individual player and their relationship with the ball. Training sessions will concentrate on dribbling, juggling, control, passing/receiving, 1v1s, 2v2s, rondos, and small sided activities. Players will also be introduced to concepts of spatial awareness, movement without the ball/supporting teammates in correct situations, and defensive/offensive responsibilities.

At U8-U10 is where we begin to establish the standard as a Club for how we want our players to approach training, as well as conduct themselves as soccer players and people. Important emphasis on enjoyment of the game, positive training attitude, and forming good relationships/respecting teammates, coaches, and opponents.

U11-U13 Application of Technique: (Train to compete)
Player development will evolve beyond a technical focus with training sessions gradually including more complex topics, such as dynamic passing patterns, advanced possession, patterns of play, and finishing combinations. Emphasis in training will shift from individual development to a team-focused environment (without overlooking the individual player’s need to continue to develop within the team).

Team structure, understanding formations, and game-specific tactics will accelerate into the U12-U13 ages. Coaches will be expected to implement the Club’s brand of soccer.

This is the stage where we look to cement our standards of conduct and training style, with the expectation from players to train with a level of commitment, intensity, enjoyment, and respect for the game.

U14-U18 Competitive Stage: (Train to win)
Advanced training concepts, in-depth tactics, and set piece organization will all be introduced.

Teams U14 and up will look to play a possession-based style, build out from the back, attack aggressively from wide areas, and seek to press high up the field when possible.

A greater need for physical development (speed, agility, strength & conditioning) and injury prevention methods are increasingly important, and will be utilized at the older age groups.

The Club’s goal is to help prepare and provide our HS-age players with the best pathway/opportunities to play at a higher level (Collegiate or beyond).
